New UK Safe Refugee Routes Could Offer Future Pathways for Sudanese Fleeing War
The UK is expanding safe and legal routes for recognised refugees, creating potential future opportunities for Sudanese people displaced by the continuing war. However, the Government has not yet confirmed Sudan as a country specifically covered by the new sponsorship routes, so Sudanese refugees should not assume that they can currently apply through them. On 28 September 2026, the UK Home Office announced that the UK Resettlement Scheme (UKRS) had reopened for new referrals.
Refugees do not simply apply directly to the UKRS: referrals are made through established processes involving the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP). The Government said referrals restarted immediately and that the first arrivals were expected before the end of 2026.
Around one quarter of referrals are expected to involve Afghan women and girls and Palestinian refugees. Alongside UKRS, the Government is developing three new sponsorship routes:
- Community sponsorship: charities and non-profit organisations will be able to sponsor refugees and support their accommodation and integration. Sponsor applications were due to open in October 2026, with first refugee arrivals expected in autumn 2027.
- Refugee study/student sponsorship:universities will be able to sponsor refugee students. Sponsor applications were also due to open in October 2026, with first arrivals expected in autumn 2027.
- Work sponsorship: companies will be able to sponsor refugees for employment. Applications from sponsors are expected to open in spring 2027, with arrivals later that year. The Government expects arrivals through UKRS and the three new community sponsorship routes initially to number in the hundreds,
later growing into the low thousands as levels of illegal migration fall. An annual cap will be set. People admitted through these routes will be placed on a five-year path towards permanent settlement.
For Sudanese refugees, there is an important qualification. Published information says that the new routes are intended for recognised refugees outside the UK, but the Government had not yet confirmed all eligibility requirements or which nationalities and locations would be covered. The humanitarian background is severe.
UK Visas and Immigration's September 2026 Sudan assessment says approximately 8.7 million people were internally displaced and a cumulative 4.6 million had been displaced externally since the war began, as of June 2026.
It also identifies particularly severe conditions in Darfur, Kordofan and Blue Nile and says individual protection cases must be assessed on their circumstances.
