About

Honouring an artist we loved and preserving a legacy that continues to live in our hearts. Al-Hawata Association, HOOTA-UK is a youth-led cultural and social association bringing together admirers of the late Sudanese artist Mahmoud Abdel Aziz, affectionately known to generations of his fans as “Al-Hoot” (The Whale). For his audience, Mahmoud was more than a celebrated singer. His relationship with Sudanese youth developed into a wider cultural and social phenomenon, with his devoted fan community becoming popularly known as *“Al-Hawata”*. Accounts of his legacy describe an influence that extended beyond music and remained strongly present after his passing. From the United Kingdom, our association seeks to *preserve, document and celebrate Mahmoud's artistic and human legacy*, while helping introduce his remarkable contribution to younger and future generations of Sudanese people. We believe that preserving Mahmoud's memory is about more than listening to the music he left behind. It is also about bringing people together, documenting his story and celebrating the sense of community, friendship and belonging that continues to connect Al-Hawata around the world. Our Annual Gathering The Association organises one principal event each year to commemorate the anniversary of the passing of “Al-Jan”, Mahmoud Abdel Aziz. The gathering brings together Al-Hawata and lovers of Sudanese music across the United Kingdom to remember Mahmoud, celebrate his artistic legacy and keep his memory alive for generations to come. Mahmoud Abdel Aziz passed away on 17 January 2013. Membership No fees. No subscriptions. No complicated membership requirements. Joining Al-Hawata Association UK is completely free. There is really only one requirement: Love Mahmoud as an artist, respect Mahmoud as a human being, and share our commitment to preserving his memory and legacy.
